Some thoughts on...

...Drake Mallard. The reason is that a new "Darkwing Duck" series in the style of the "Duck Tales"-reboot is probably in the making. If the only make-over DW will receive is as a side-character in the new "Duck Tales"-series, forget that I ever wrote this. ;) While working on this year's Inktober-batch, my second sketch happened to be Drake in his typical 90s-design and that's when I realised how much I would dislike a reboot of the original series.

 

 

 

 

 

 

I recently saw a leaked picture of the redesign that is supposed to be the new Darkwing. He looks rather fetching with his nifty belt and trim build, somehow dynamic, strong and youthful. But that's not what defines this character to my mind. I love that he's not really muscular or strong and that his plans mostly backfire because he's trying too hard. I smile about the fact that he actually possesses the duck-equivalent of a receding hairline, struggling with the enormous task of fighting St. Canard's villains by night and raising his adopted daughter by day. He's not working properly without a few mugs of coffee and his neighbours are annoying. He's the everyman who's simply trying to get by. And let's face it: Drake Mallard NEVER looked truly handsome while not wearing the purple suit, fedora and cape of his hero persona. But that's how I like him (and drew him here, obviously) and I hope the redesign won't destroy this character that was so cleverly crafted and has a life of his own by now.
